World Archery’s Executive Board chose Yankton as the host city for the 2018 World Archery Indoor Championships and 2020 World Archery Field Championships at its meeting in Istanbul, Turkey on 12/13 December 2015.
The event bids demonstrated the same passion for archery that was evident in the Yankton community when it hosted the world youth championships in the summer of 2015.
Teams said they loved visiting a venue, a town and a group of fantastic volunteers and staff that welcomed athletes from around the world and showed them what their community in South Dakota had to offer.
The 2018 World Archery Indoor Championships is expected to draw approximately 550 athletes, athlete trainers and officials representing 60 countries national archery teams to compete in the NFAA Easton Yankton Archery Center.
The 2020 World Archery Field Championships, set in the countryside around Yankton, will see around 450 attend.
Both events are expected to attract local spectators, receive significant coverage in regional and national media, and be followed by millions on World Archery’s web and broadcast platforms.
World Archery Secretary General Tom Dielen said: “Yankton proved it could host, and host extremely well, major international archery events when the city welcomed over 550 athletes, athlete trainers and officials from 60 Countries to the World Archery Youth Championships in June 2015.”
“The atmosphere, enthusiasm and engagement of the local community was amazing – and we received extremely positive feedback from the athletes, the press and the spectators who came to watch the competition.”
“We have no doubt that, with Yankton’s pedigree as a leading archery venue, the events in 2018 and 2020 will be just as impressive!”
NFAA President and Center Director Bruce Cull said: “The reception to the world youth championships earlier this year exceeded even our high expectations – and we were proud of just how much the people of Yankton embraced the visiting athletes.”
“Following positive feedback from the public and businesses of Yankton, athletes and coaches, and World Archery – we looked for every opportunity to bring another of the sport’s international events back to the world-class facility we have here in the NFAA Easton Yankton Archery Center.”
